EAV told us to fly to Mombasa so...

(x)

Originally, we had planned to ride the bus from Nairobi to Mombasa, but since that takes 12 hours and, round trip, we would have lost an entire day, we decided to treat ourselves to a flight. So, instead of exhausted after a night of barely any sleep on a crammed bus, we arrived in Mombasa relaxed and amused about the fact that the airline offered full on-board entertainment on a not even hour long flight.
What hit me was the heat and humidity. Nairobi rarely gets uncomfortably hot and it cools down at night so you don't even need air conditioning. At the coast, it's constantly 30°C hell.
Our hotel wasn't overwhelming, but we had a great view from the roof terrace.

The Hipster-ness of this picture i love it

What you can probably already see from these pictures is that Mombasa is far more Middle Eastern than Nairobi. The people are also a wide mixture of Ethnicities and the city, architecturally and culturally is very much shaped by Islam.

After our first uncomfortably hot night in Africa, we went to look at Fort Jesus.

In the old town, there were many decorated doors like these.

I love this lizard!

Now we know what inspired Conchita

Afterwards, we took a guided tour through the old town of Mombasa.

Inside the fish market. Yes it was disgusting, and not just for ethical reasons.

We didn't stay a second night but moved on to Diani Beach, our last stop. That means my next blog entry will be the last one about this journey.
